Practical tools. Human judgment.

Less admin.
More room
to work.

We’re developing straightforward tools for small-business scheduling, computer care, investor reporting, and tax preparation.

One workshop. Four practical directions.

Services in development

Useful tools.
Clear purpose.

Four focused services are taking shape. Public access and subscription pricing will be announced here when they’re ready.

01 / SMALL BUSINESSPrivate demo · testing underway

Shift Manager

Keep the team covered.
See the hours clearly.

A planned scheduling and attendance service for small teams—especially when a regular week turns into callouts, swaps, and extra hours.

What we’re building

  • Weekly schedules and employee availability
  • Callout coverage and replacement acceptance
  • Projected overtime and conflict warnings
  • Timesheet review and attendance summaries
First milestone

A private working demo with fictional employees. Public access remains in development while storage, usability, and business requirements are reviewed.

02 / COMPUTER CAREPlanned free tool

Automated Windows Tools

Built-in capabilities.
Easier to use.

A free Windows maintenance assistant is planned to bring selected built-in tools into one clear dashboard, with understandable results and optional automation for supported tasks.

What we’re exploring

  • Startup applications and resource usage
  • Storage space and Windows maintenance
  • Available hardware health reports
  • Before-and-after performance comparisons
First milestone

A working Windows prototype, followed by testing before a free public download. Microsoft provides the underlying Windows tools; Grid 71 provides the interface and workflow.

HDD and SSD: different drives, different maintenance

HDD · spinning disk
Defragmentation brings scattered file pieces together, reducing the movement needed to read them. It can help when fragmentation is affecting performance.
SSD · flash storage
There is no moving read head. Routine SSD maintenance uses TRIM/retrim to tell the drive which storage blocks are no longer needed, helping it manage reusable space. It is not the same job as rearranging files on an HDD.

Let Windows choose the appropriate maintenance. Optimize Drives normally runs on a schedule. Windows may also perform limited SSD defragmentation as part of its own maintenance policy, so “never optimize an SSD” is not accurate.

Our planned approach: identify the drive type, explain its status, and use supported Windows maintenance. No repeated blanket defragmentation or promised speed boosts without evidence. If the drive type is unknown, show that uncertainty.

03 / INVESTOR SUPPORTConcept under review

Investor’s Assistant

Follow the market.
Keep the records together.

A proposed reporting service for investors: source-linked market summaries, watchlists, and portfolio records to support tax preparation.

What we’re exploring

  • Market reports with sources and data timestamps
  • Watchlists and user-selected alerts
  • Portfolio activity, dividends, and sale records
  • Cost-basis information and reviewable exports
First milestone

A sample report and fictional portfolio. Data-provider access and costs are still being evaluated. The concept focuses on information and recordkeeping.

04 / TAX PREPARATION SUPPORTConcept under review

Tax & Expense Planner

Organize the expenses.
Understand the estimate.

A proposed calculator and recordkeeping service to help individuals and small businesses prepare information for their tax returns.

What we’re exploring

  • Income and expense organization
  • Estimates for clearly identified tax years
  • Visible assumptions and calculation steps
  • Summaries to review with filing software or a preparer
First milestone

A calculator for a limited set of tax situations, checked against official guidance. Tax preparation support is planned; electronic filing is not currently available.

How we work

People decide.
Tools help us
get there.

Practical experience shapes the problem. Technology helps build and test the solution.

Grid 71 is an independent workshop founded by Alan Payne. Our projects bring operations experience, curiosity, and AI-assisted development together.

01

Keep the human in charge.

Make information understandable and keep consequential decisions with the person responsible.

02

Prove the useful part first.

Start with a working demonstration, test realistic situations, and learn from feedback.

03

Be clear about progress.

Show what is available, what is being built, and what still needs to be tested.

Games & imagination

Still making worlds.

Our game experiments continue alongside the practical tools. Small beginnings. Room to grow.

A world to make their own

An early fantasy concept: a hero and a handful of settlers building a home and discovering what lies beyond.
